Toenail reconstruction is similar to gel nails in that the gel is layered and then solidified using a UV light. The nail formed during toenail repair is described as a prosthesis; it is not an acrylic nail, but it is designed to appear and feel exactly like a natural nail. 
Toenail reconstruction employs a flexible gel, whereas fingernail gel in salons is hard. The gel must be flexible to let the toenail to move with the natural movements of the toe; this is critical since the nail will then survive longer. 

The reconstructed nail will not damage the normal nail or hinder growth, thus the natural nail can grow beneath the prosthesis.
